This volunteer project began in 2019 at Wiregrass Lake Metropark as large numbers of different species continually were observed at this site. Annual surveys start in May and continue into September approximately every ten days, depending on weather conditions. Wiregrass Lake is divided into four quadrants with dragonfly and damselfly count totals tallied for each quadrant as well as overall totals tallied for each monitoring day and for the season. Volunteers count individuals as they fly over the lake, along the shoreline, on the trail, and in the vegetation on the side of the trail opposite the lake, and the data is then given to Metroparks. Approximately 50 species have been recorded at this site, which is approximately half of all species ever recorded for Lucas County. Some uncommon species that have been documented are: Ashy Clubtail (Phanogomphus lividus), Dusky Clubtail (Phanogomphus spicatus), Swamp Spreadwing (Lestes vigilax), Dusky Dancer (Argia translata), Cyrano Darner (Nasiaeschna pentacantha), and Dragonhunter (Hagenius brevistylus). Data contributes to statewide knowledge as part of the Ohio Dragonfly Survey.
