Butterfly Identification and Monitoring Workshop

Metroparks Toledo is partnering with the Ohio Lepidopterists, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and the Ohio Biological Survey to present the 25th Annual Butterfly Identification and Monitoring Workshop from 10 AM to 4:30 PM on Saturday March 29, 2025 at Toledo Botanical Garden.
The workshop is open to anyone with an interest in Ohio’s butterflies, butterfly gardening, moths, population trends, and more. Sessions are concurrent so that participants can focus on topics of primary interest.
Metroparks has been monitoring local butterfly populations since 1999, and the data collected has contributed to the identification of long-term, statewide trends. Teams of monitors, trained by butterfly experts, observe butterflies weekly along fixed transects. Monitors involved in this survey, are likely the first to notice population changes, temporary breeding colonies of subtropical butterflies in Ohio, and new species moving into Ohio.
