Step into 2026 with a BIG goal – to complete Metroparks Toledo’s most epic day hike! The 15.3 mile Oak Openings Hiking Trail is Metroparks’ longest trail and the perfect motivation to get moving this spring. Winding through the diverse habitats of Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, this must-hike trail features stunning views of woodlands, prairies, floodplains, and oak savannas. The Oak Openings Hiking Trail is sometimes called the “Scout Trail” because of its popularity and history with local scouts . Boy Scouts have used this trail to earn their hiking merit badge for more than 60 years.

Not quite ready to tackle 15 + miles? Inspired by the scouts’ tradition of achieving goals on the trail, Metroparks has launched a new program called Couch to Scout Trail to help you achieve your own goals.  Couch to Scout Trail kicks off on Sunday, March 1st with a one-hour hike at Wildwood Preserve Metropark. Hikes of increasing distances will be offered weekly in March, April, and May at various parks to keep you on track. The program culminates with a “Scout Trail” Hike on Saturday, June 6. 

All hikes will be led by Metroparks volunteers. Participants must register for individual hikes in addition to Couch to Scout Trail. It is not required to attend all hikes on the schedule, and participants are encouraged to complete hikes on their own in addition to volunteer-led hikes. Trail Challenge participants will earn stickers for completing their goals and are encouraged to join the Trail Challenge Facebook group.
