Flag Pole, Landscaping a Tribute to Husband
Mike Heck spent his life with kids, as a respected high school teacher and successful baseball and basketball coach, as well as a father and grandfather.
So, Kay decided that a fitting tribute to her husband would be to fund an Eagle Scout project to replace the flag and flagpole near the park’s Roche De Bout Shelter.
The flagpole had been damaged in a storm, so Eagle Scout Scott Keaffaber volunteered to relocate it closer to the Shelter. During the Fall of 2017, the pole was installed and Eagle Scout Keaffaber handled the landscaping, path and lighting for the area.
“Scott was excited to be able to participate in this memorial project,” explained Chris Smalley, Park Services Supervisor. “He was happy to be working on something that was both patriotic and meaningful.”
“Our four grandsons live near Farnsworth,” Kay said. In addition to having a beautiful park to visit, they’ll have a lasting memory of their grandfather in a prominent location.
