Metroparks, Mercy Health Prescribe Nature to Nurture Your Wellbeing

Time spent outdoors is good for our mind, body and spirit. That’s the simple message behind NatureRX, a collaborative program between Metroparks Toledo and Mercy Health that strengthens their shared mission to improve community health.

“By addressing key health priorities through nature-based activities and access to the outdoors, NatureRX connects nature and wellness in an innovative way, letting nature nurture physical health, emotional balance and overall wellbeing,” said Dave Zenk, `executive director of Metroparks Toledo.

This year, the park and healthcare systems are piloting initiatives focused on mental health, emphasizing the benefits of time spent in nature to reduce stress, boost our mood and stave off depression.

“Mental health challenges continue to grow across our community, and we know people need support that is accessible, proactive and woven into everyday life,” said Bob Baxter, president, Mercy Health - Toledo. “NatureRx takes our partnership with Metroparks Toledo to the next level by recognizing nature as a powerful tool for reducing stress, anxiety and social isolation while supporting overall wellbeing. By connecting patients and families to safe outdoor spaces, we’re expanding how we think about mental healthcare and helping more people access meaningful support when they need it.”

As part of the initiative, providers at pilot Mercy Health offices will prescribe that their patients spend time outdoors and provide information about nearby Metroparks and the health benefits of nature.

At Metroparks, NatureRX will be integrated into programming, including walks with doctors and mindfulness activities. A page dedicated to NatureRX, with suggestions for spending time in nature and evidence of the benefits to peoples’ physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, will be added to MetroparksToledo.com.

“The idea is to prompt people to take that first step to a healthier lifestyle by walking in a park, exploring new ways to enjoy the outdoors through outdoor skills programs or simply being in nature,” Zenk said.

Outdoor Discovery Day this Weekend

NatureRX will debut this Saturday at Outdoor Discovery Day, presented by Mercy Health, from noon to 4 p.m. at Side Cut Metropark, Silver Lake Area. The annual event is an opportunity to step into nature and sample outdoor activities offered in the Metroparks, from kayaking to tree climbing, archery, bicycling and eco-therapy. Activities can be adapted for participants of all abilities.

Mercy Health professionals will showcase how time in nature supports mental and physical health, and offer on-site health screenings and resources, including a mobile mammography van.

The event will include music, food trucks and children’s activities, providing a full afternoon of outdoor activity for all ages.
