Trimming the Tree, Outdoor Skills Style
As the weather turns cold, the Metroparks Toledo Outdoor Skills team chooses one special tree for a festive makeover. With hundreds of feet of extension cords, spools of colorful lights, and dozens of hanging decorations, staff create a lighted spectacle to be enjoyed by over 150 adventure-seekers at Holiday Tree Climbing programs.
Decorating day is a team effort, with some staff “on rope” and others supporting from the ground. A few staff move around the canopy to hang decorations while others work together to wrap the trunk with lights. The ground crew decorates the area around the tree and attaches needed supplies to ropes for the climbing crew.
In addition to preparing for the upcoming Holiday Tree Climbs, the decorating day is an opportunity to train new staff, refresh the skills of seasoned staff, and test out cold-weather gear for the winter season. Holiday tunes and shared sweet treats keep spirits high in the face of frosty fingers and toes.
