The Sisters of St. Francis and St. Hedwig Parish The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania began teaching at St. Hedwig School, Toledo Ohio, in 1916. Bishop Joseph Schrembs was looking for Sisters to teach the children of Polish immigrants. The Sylvania Franciscan Sisters answered that quest and 18 Sisters comprised the first Polish-teaching faculty of St. Hedwig School. Over the decades the Sylvania Franciscan Sisters continued to teach at St. Hedwig School as well as in numerous parishes, Catholic high schools and grade schools in Toledo and throughout Northwest Ohio.
