White glass deviled egg plate with gold trim

Location 130

Date: mid 1900's

Owner: Sherry Plessner

This deviled egg plate belonged to my great-grandmother, Viola Battin Thomas. She was born in Toledo on January 1, 1900 when her parents, William Wilber Battin and Verna Miller Battin, lived on Yondota Street on the East Side. To her friends, Viola was known as Vi, but her grandchildren and great-grandchildren all called her Nana. She lived in Toledo all her life, for 97 years, and, in her younger years, she loved to entertain. My mother, Icia Linda Mummert taught me to make deviled eggs without consulting a written recipe when I was growing up here in Toledo. Mom also taught me to make beef roll-ups with Buddig beef and cream cheese. The central portion of this plate is perfect for serving beef roll-ups with the deviled eggs. I remember many Toledo Thanksgivings when deviled eggs and beef roll-ups were served on this special plate. To this day, deviled eggs and beef roll-ups are my most requested contributions to family holiday meals. Even though this plate is too fragile to use anymore, I keep it, proudly displayed in my china cabinet, as a reminder of my family history in the Glass City.
