My mother was born in Toledo of Italian descent, Catholic. She married my father; another first generation Toledan born Catholic, although German. My mother received Hummels as gifts throughout her early marriage and as a result I grew up with them peering at me from the corner of the bookshelf in the family room. I now have a few of these Hummels. I remember my mother, who taught school in Maumee, talking about the Franciscan sister who painted the inspirations for these figurines. She loved the arts and she participated in Toledo in ways. She loved this city. I think she loved the people that gave her these figurines more than the objects themselves. I know she did.
