This cross came from St. George Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral in the old north end of Toledo. The church was significant to the Arab Christian communities that immigrated to Toledo from Syria and Lebanon and settled in the north end of the city. The immigrants sought out economic opportunities in Toledo and worked as peddlers and eventually opened their own businesses as they established themselves in their community. These communities build St. George Cathedral in 1919. Over time, many of the parish members moved to west Toledo and the suburbs and the church moved to its current location at 3754 Woodley Road. The new Cathedral was consecrated in 1974. A hand cross like this is normally use by the priest to bless the parishioners at the end of the service. The parishioners walk forward and venerate the cross.
