The ceramic tile of St. Francis with birds was created at Alverno Studio by Sister Jane Mary Sorosiak, OSF, a well-known local artist who has produced ceramic murals locally and nationally. St. Francis is known for his ministry to the poor and underprivileged, treating all of God's creation, from humans to animals to nature, with respect, and for founding the Franciscan order. Alverno studio is located on the campus of the Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania, who have served since 1916 in Catholic high schools (Central Catholic High School, Cardinal Stritch High School) and grade schools in Toledo (Little Flower, Our Lady of Lourdes, Regina Coeli, St. Hedwig's, St. Hyacinth's, St. Joan of Arc, and Saints Peter & Paul).
