Hit the trails of Oak Openings Preserve Metropark and set out on an adventure in the GRIT Freedom Chair. This chair rolls over rocks, roots, sand, and mud, allowing users to explore almost any trail. The chair can be rented for personal use at Oak Openings Preserve, Oak Openings Lodge free of charge.
For safety reasons, users are required to bring a companion. Also, if assistance is needed to transfer to the Freedom Chair, the companion must be able to assist with the transfer. Park staff and/or volunteers are unable to assist with transfers.
The Freedom Chair has a seat width of 20 inches and a comfort cushion, 26" mountain bike wheels, and a MIT-designed and patented lever system with a pull-back break system. The maximum weight restriction is 300 pounds.
Rental is free thanks to a Metroparks Members Grant. The Freedom Chair is available year-round for a maximum of three hours at a time. Rentals are out of the Oak Openings Lodge, where many different trails can be accessed.
Wearing a helmet is required. Helmets are available to borrow or you can bring own.
