Quarry Loop Trail offers views of tallgrass prairie, meadows, wetlands, and a former quarry pond. Exposed Devonian age limestone (350-450 million years old) here is rich with fossils and boasts “glacial striations” (from 12,000 years ago) that can actually be viewed near the pond area---not too far from the trail. Towering oaks and hickories can be seen alongside, growing in open woodland areas. During the summer months, tall prairie grasses such as big bluestem and Indian grass can be seen among yellow prairie dock. American kestrels and Red-tailed hawks can often be viewed perched or flying after prey.
Access the trail from the parking area near the old hog barn on Schadel Road.
