Secor Upland Woods Trail

The Upland Woods Trail cuts deeper into the forest. Towering tulip trees reach for the sky then branch out with tulip-shaped leaves. Their flowers bloom in May. Many trees in the swamp forest have buttressing trunks; that is, roots spread wider than normal at the base for added support. While there, listen for the flute-like call of the wood thrush. This trail passes through some low, wet areas and then past remnant glacial dunes. The sandy hills are an unusual contrast to the flat forest floor and were once beaches and sand bars formed by glaciers over 10,000 years ago.
