A Leonard’s Skipper was recently spotted at Oak Openings Preserve. The uncommon butterfly is an indicator of high-quality prairie and barren habitats in the Oak Openings Region. The insect often prefers a showy prairie plant called blazing star (seen in photo) for nectar. Little bluestem grass is a food source for their caterpillars.
