A trail connecting Secor and Wiregrass Lake Metroparks, a trail extension at Blue Creek Metropark  and a singletrack bike trail at Oak Openings Preserve Metropark will all move forward with the help of grant funding.

A 1.8-mile section of the Oak Openings Corridor Trail from Secor to Wiregrass Lake will receive $593,449 through the Clean Ohio Recreation Trails Fund. The total cost of the project is estimated at $791,266. The multiuse trail will be built in 2017.

Another grant for the Corridor Trail, for $158,252, has been approved through the federal Transportation Alternatives Program and will be used as a match for the larger grant. Metroparks will contribute $39,563, or 20 percent of the cost. The grant was administered by the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments.

The Blue Creek north perimeter trail will receive $150,000 from the federal Recreational Trails Program. The trail, to be built next year, will provide a 0.56-mile, multiuse connection between the soccer fields on Providence Street and existing trails at Village Park in Whitehouse. The total cost of the project is estimated at $219,294. In future phases of development, the trail will extend to create a loop around the former Nona France Quarry.

The singletrack trail for mountain biking at Oak Openings received two grant awards, one for $116,401 in Lucas County and one for $17,000 in Fulton County. The Lucas County grant will be used to build a trailhead with parking, restrooms and flexible programming space. The Fulton County grant will go toward the construction of 6 miles of the 11-mile trail. The total cost of the project is estimated at $241,775. The trail is expected to be complete next year.
